Chicken Shawarma

Chicken Shawarma is a middle eastern dish. It can be served in pita pockets with garlic sauce ,onion, pickles and fries. Or, Shawarma Bowl(rice on the bottom and then chicken shawarma topped with pickled and garlic sauce.

 Chicken shawarma is very easy to make and it's healthy.
Do you always ask yourself how these restaurants make their shawarma?
I think everybody can make it, it's super easy. You might need a specific grill . But, don't worry i didn't use or buy the shawarma grill.
I used skewers to hold the chicken vertically and of course oven to bake. (It's better to use the metal skewers)

 Chicken Shawarma homemade easy recipe

cook time: 1 hr 30 mins

  • 2 lbs. chicken breasts
  • 1 tbsp greek yogurt
  • 2 small garlic cloves,minced
  • 2-3 tsp shawarma spices(ginger-cumin-parsley-turmeric-chili-cinnamon-black pepper-nutmeg-salt-cloves-coriander)
  • salt
  • 1/2 lemon juice, squeezed
  • 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp pepper paste
  • 1 tsp vegetable oil or olive oil
*Note: You can buy the shawarma spices from any arabic store or in case you want to make your own here it is:
Shawarma spices:
1tbsp ginger
1tbsp cumin
1 tbso parsley
1 tbsp turmeric
1/4 or 1/2 tbsp chili
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tbsp nutmeg
1 tvsp cloves
1 tbsp coriander

Mix all the spices and use 2-3 tsp for this recipe 

Yogurt Sauce:
1cup greek yogurt
1 clove garlic,minced
1 tsp cumin
1 tbsp lemon juice
Salt and pepper

In a bowl combine all the ingredients and mix them.

  1. In a large bowl combine the garlic,greek yogurt,lemon juice,oil,vinegar and mix well using fork or whisker.
  2. First cut the chicken breast piece in half then Slice it into very thin slices. Add the chicken slices to the large bowl mixture, use your hands or spoon to coat the chicken with the marinate sauce.
  3. Marinate at least 2 hours, the longer the better.
  4. Preheat oven 500 degree F.
  5. Place foil to the sheet pan. Start adding the chicken slices by stacking 2-3 slices up,and then place the skewers on the chicken. Continue stacking the chicken. Cover the shawarma skewers with foil,make sure the whole thing is covered.
  6. Cook the chicken for 20 mins in a 500 degree F. Oven. After 20 mins lower it to 400 degree F.  and let cook for 1 hr and 10 mins.(total: 1 1/2 hour).
  7. Enjoy the chicken shawarma as a sandwich, or over salad or maybe over rice.
